In brief

A bomb blast in a Moscow residential area has resulted in the death of Armen Sarkisyan, a pro-Russian separatist leader from Ukraine. Reports suggest his killing reflects ongoing tensions and targeted violence against figures associated with the Russian-backed efforts in Ukraine.

In a significant incident on Monday, a high-profile pro-Russia separatist from Ukraine was reportedly killed following a bomb explosion at a secured apartment complex in Moscow, as reported by local news outlets citing Russian authorities. Armen Sarkisyan, who founded a battalion engaged in fighting in eastern Ukraine, was critically injured in the blast and succumbed to his injuries in a hospital shortly after. The Russian Investigative Committee confirmed that the explosion at the Scarlet Sails apartment complex had not only resulted in Sarkisyan's death but had also sent four others to the hospital for various injuries. Following the explosion, disturbing images from the scene showed extensive damage, including shattered glass doors and broken entrances, underscoring the severity of the attack. There are no official suspects announced yet, nor has it been clarified if Sarkisyan was a resident of the apartment complex where the blast occurred. In 2014, he was already under scrutiny in Ukraine for involvement in the planning of killings and illegal activities against opposition activists during protests in the capital, Kyiv. The explosion marks another violent episode in Moscow, coming on the heels of other lethal attacks linked to the ongoing conflict, such as the assassination of a Russian general last December through a bomb on a scooter. Ivan Prikhodko, the mayor of Horlivka, a town in eastern Ukraine under Russian control, expressed condolences on Telegram, praising Sarkisyan's battalion for its pivotal involvement in maintaining security in the Donetsk region seized by Russian forces. The Kremlin has yet to provide specific details on how the explosion occurred, and spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov stated that an official investigation is underway without further elaboration. As of now, Ukrainian authorities have refrained from commenting on the incident.
