A 62-year-old man, Fan Weiqiu, has been executed after driving his vehicle into a crowd, resulting in the deaths of at least 35 individuals and injuring many others in an exercise area near a stadium in Zhuhai, southern China. This incident, which occurred on November 11, is considered the deadliest attack on Chinese soil in the last decade.
The court found that Fan's actions stemmed from "dissatisfaction" regarding the division of his property post-divorce. His sentence was handed down less than a month after the attack, with the court denouncing his motives as "extremely vile" and the methods of his assault as "particularly cruel."
This tragic event was part of a worrying trend, as it marked one of 19 similar attacks targeting random strangers across China in 2024, with two occurring within a week of the Zhuhai incident. The execution and previous conviction reflect the state's firm stance on maintaining public safety and the judicial system's response to violent crimes.
