In brief
The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on Integrity Technology Group for allegedly aiding the Chinese hacking group Flax Typhoon in cyberattacks targeting American systems and state officials.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions on Friday against Integrity Technology Group, a cybersecurity firm headquartered in Beijing, attributing to it the support of a state-sponsored Chinese hacking group known as Flax Typhoon. This group has been implicated in extensive cyber operations that compromised U.S. communications systems and conducted surveillance on multiple continents between the summer of 2022 and 2023.According to a statement from the Treasury, Integrity Technology Group had been a vital component of Flax Typhoon's efforts, facilitating a steady exchange of information between the hacking group and its infrastructure. This announcement coincided with a prior revelation that a Chinese intelligence agency had infiltrated the Treasury Department's systems, reportedly accessing unclassified documents and the workstations of government officials. While officials did not confirm if Flax Typhoon was involved in the Treasury breach, the sanctions reflect a broader effort to counteract Chinese cyber threats. These measures come on the heels of the disclosure last year that Salt Typhoon, another group linked to Chinese intelligence, had also infiltrated U.S. telecommunications networks to monitor communications of high-profile political figures."Malicious cyberactors and their backers will face consequences for their actions," warned Bradley T. Smith, acting under secretary of the Treasury, highlighting the department's commitment to strengthen cybersecurity measures within public and private sectors. The sweeping sanctions limit any financial interactions with Integrity Technology Group and freeze its U.S. assets. The recent actions by the Treasury follow the September announcement from the FBI, which had dismantled a network of 200,000 consumer devices compromised and weaponized by Flax Typhoon. The implications of the Treasury breach remain unclear; however, the agency is a prime target for state-sponsored hackers due to its role in national security and financial sanctions.
