In brief
After a blaze that killed a Scottish couple and their two children on the outskirts of Waterford, police released two women in their 30s and a man in his 50s who were arrested on Tuesday, citing insufficient evidence. The man in his 20s, arrested Thursday, is still detained. The case highlights the challenges of securing charges in arson investigations where forensic evidence is limited.
Police release three suspects in Waterford arson case.
Three persons – a woman in her 30s, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 50s – were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the arson that killed Philip and Kim English and their children, Jayden and Callum, in a Waterford neighbourhood. Gardaí announced that they have been released without charge because prosecutors found the evidence insufficient to proceed.
A fourth suspect, a man in his 20s arrested on Thursday, remains in custody as investigations continue. The Dublin‑based police force remains engaged in collecting forensic evidence from the blaze, which began on Birch Avenue earlier this month.
Authorities urge community members to report any suspicious activity. The investigation is ongoing, with updates expected in the coming days.
