In brief
Israel’s latest claims spark global outrage amid international law debates concerning hospital protections.
As international criticism intensifies, the Israeli military released a video on Tuesday asserting that militant groups, including Hamas, are operating out of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. This comes following the Israeli military's controversial detainment of the hospital's director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, late last month. The military claims to possess new evidence to support its assertions that these groups are utilizing hospitals as strategic locations for military operations, in violation of international law. The footage, featuring the interrogation of one of over 240 militants apprehended during a raid on the hospital, shows a young man identifying himself as Anas Muhammad Faiz al-Sharif, a 21-year-old cleaning supervisor turned Hamas operative. In the video, al-Sharif admits that armed groups used the hospital for various military activities, including weapon transfers and surveillance, due to its perceived immunity from Israeli strikes.International law upholds that hospitals must be safeguarded, even if they provide care for combatants. However, if such facilities are involved in harmful actions against the enemy, they may lose this protection. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have stated that any military action taken must consider the expected military benefits against potential civilian casualties, emphasizing that civilian harm must remain proportionate. Kamal Adwan Hospital has faced multiple Israeli raids over recent months, with the director noting prior to his detention that staff had frequently been targeted, resulting in the arrest or expulsion of most personnel during earlier operations. The accusations surrounding the hospital have ignited a fresh wave of scrutiny regarding the broader conduct of military operations in densely populated areas like Gaza.
