Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) representatives have arrived in Rome to press for a definitive resolution to the crisis that has plagued the Church for decades. Speaking at a news conference, Peter Isely from SNAP emphasized the importance of establishing a zero-tolerance policy for both abusers and those who have concealed their actions. The goal, he said, is to work collaboratively with the next pope to eradicate clerical abuse.

Weeks prior to the conclave, SNAP launched a website advocating accountability by tracking each cardinal’s response to credible abuse allegations. Their findings suggest that few within the Church hierarchy remain unscathed by the scandal.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed that the topic of sexual abuse was a focal point of discussion among the cardinals leading up to the election. He noted that they intend to keep the issue at the forefront of their concerns to ensure lasting awareness and solutions can be formulated.

Additionally, SNAP outlined a strategic plan intended to guide the new pope’s first actions upon assuming office, advocating for immediate and effective measures to remedy the crisis facing the Church.
