In brief

As South Sudan teeters on the edge of chaos, the Trump administration announced a blanket visa ban for all South Sudanese passport holders, further exacerbating the humanitarian and political difficulties facing the nation.

The decision comes amid escalating tensions among political leaders, particularly following the house arrest of the vice president last month. Millions in South Sudan are grappling with severe hunger, displacement, and disease, all while U.S. assistance diminishes. This unilateral visa ban, according to regional analysts, signals a troubling retreat from American support for the nation it helped establish over a decade ago.Daniel Akech, a senior analyst from the International Crisis Group, warns, “A massive storm is forming over South Sudan, and the visa ban only adds to the anxiety people have about all that could go wrong.” On Saturday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed the restrictions, while Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau stated that South Sudan had declined the repatriation of one of its citizens. As of now, the U.S. government has not clarified whether it will pursue the deportation of those whose visas are now invalidated. There has been no official response from South Sudan regarding the visa ban, leaving many questions unanswered amid an already dire situation.
