SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A tragic shootout outside a church in Salt Lake City, Utah, has left two individuals dead and six others suffering from injuries. The incident occurred during a funeral service at a local church belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Investigators have revealed that the shooting stemmed from a dispute among attendees who were familiar with each other.

So far, no arrests have been made, leading police to seek cooperation from witnesses. Five people remain hospitalized, with three in critical condition, while police maintain a protective presence at local hospitals. Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd stated, “We are looking into the reason and cause for the gunfire.” Authorities have expressed uncertainty about whether the shooting is gang-related and are trying to get testimonies from potential witnesses.

The church, a congregation primarily serving Tongan members, had gathered for a memorial service when the gunfire erupted. Observers from a nearby low-income housing complex rushed outside upon hearing the shots to assist the victims and console distressed attendees.

Witness Brennan McIntire reported hearing the gunshots from his apartment, prompting him to rush outside to find chaos, with individuals caring for the wounded. His wife, Kenna, described the emotional aftermath, stating, It was really heartbreaking to hear and see.”

Law enforcement mobilized extensively in the area with around 100 vehicles on scene, along with helicopters overhead. Police are now examining surveillance footage and data from license plate readers while searching for suspects.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the violence, emphasizing that such incidents should never occur near a place of worship or during a memorial gathering. The church expressed gratitude towards the first responders and extended prayers for those affected by the violence.

This shooting comes in a climate of heightened concern for the faith community, especially following previous violent incidents targeting Latter-day Saints, including a shooting in Michigan. The FBI has linked past violent acts to anti-religious sentiment against this religious group.
