BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — A mass shooting at a crowded bar on St. Helena Island has led to the devastating loss of four lives and inflicted injuries on at least 20 others, as confirmed by local authorities.
The incident took place early Sunday at Willie’s Bar and Grill, where a large crowd had gathered. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they encountered multiple victims with gunshot wounds.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, “Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter.” This statement conveyed the gravity of the situation, urging the public to remain patient as investigations continue.
Local reports indicate that four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while at least 20 others sustained injuries, with four listed in critical condition at regional hospitals.
Willie Turral, owner of the bar, stated that those present were attending a Battery Creek High School alumni tailgate event during the shooting. The chaotic circumstances prompted immediate expressions of sorrow and solidarity from community leaders.
U.S. Representative Nancy Mace expressed her heartbreak, stating, “Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
The bar is situated in St. Helena Island, home to the largest Gullah community on the South Carolina coast, which is culturally significant as a center for descendants of enslaved Africans.
