OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A sophomore basketball player at Connors State College in Oklahoma, Ethan Dietz, has died following an injury during a game in Texas. The college confirmed his passing in a statement on social media, indicating that the injury was a head trauma sustained during the second half of Saturday's match. College spokesperson Shannon Rigsby noted they lacked further details about the incident.

The college's statement highlighted Dietz's dedication and character, stating, “Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy, to value hard work and being part of a team.” The sentiment was echoed across the campus community, which is now in mourning. Messages were sent to the athletic director and men’s basketball coach seeking additional comments on the tragedy.

In light of Dietz's death, several men's and women's basketball games have been canceled. The 6-foot-8 forward from Vilonia, Arkansas, was an emerging star who averaged 11 points per game this season, and before his injury, he had contributed eight points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of play.

To honor his memory, a vigil is scheduled for December 1 on the Connors State College campus in Warner, Oklahoma.
