Tanzanian Drug Kingpin Arrested in Zambia: Major Drug Seizure Unveiled
Ahmed Muharram, a notorious Tanzanian drug-trafficker, was taken into custody during a raid by the Zambian Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Lusaka. Authorities announced his arrest today, highlighting him as a significant target in their ongoing fight against drug trafficking.
During the operation on Tuesday, DEC confiscated 221.2 kg of cannabis hidden in a lorry in Lusaka's Lilayi area. The search extended to Muharram's residence, leading to the discovery of an additional 1,159.6 kg of high-grade cannabis, bringing the total seizure to 1,380.8 kg. This comprehensive raid not only resulted in a large quantity of marijuana being removed from circulation but also involved the arrest of multiple suspects linked to drug trafficking.
The 40-year-old Muharram, who had been on the agency's watch-list, faces serious charges as the trafficking, possession, and use of illegal drugs are punishable under Zambian law. The DEC has reiterated its commitment to preventing the country from becoming a hub for drug trafficking.
In related incidents, a Zambian national was also arrested for trafficking cough syrup containing codeine, while various other arrests included Zambian and Burundian nationals implicated in separate drug trafficking operations.
The DEC emphasized the need for continued collaboration and intelligence-led operations to combat the escalating issue of drug abuse and trafficking in Zambia, particularly concerning substances like cannabis and heroin.
As Zambia contends with drug abuse issues, the DEC continues to carry out operations aimed at disrupting illegal drug networks and enforcing stringent drug laws.
