Hafidh Ameir Hassan Dies at Age 71
The husband of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, succumbed to complications from a heart condition on Monday at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital on Zanzibar’s island. Vice‑President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death through a formal statement, noting that the former agricultural academic had lived a relatively private life.
Ameir became the nation’s first First Gentleman when President Hassan took office in 2021. His low‑profile presence was marked by occasional appearances beside her, yet he was a constant supporter of her administration. He and President Hassan married in 1978, before Samia entered the political arena, and together they raised four children – three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who now represents Zanzibar in the national legislature.
Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, a village on the semi‑autonomous island. In the days following the announcement, international leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto, publicly expressed grief and solidarity.
