WASHINGTON (AP) — A chaotic wave of severe weather is currently sweeping across the United States, from unusual heat in California to damaging winds around Washington, D.C., affecting over 100 million people on Monday.
Storms wreaked havoc in the eastern part of the country, leading to over 2,000 flight cancellations and early school closures in the mid-Atlantic states due to anticipated high winds and tornadoes.
Other states, such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, experienced blizzard conditions with heavy snowfall, while Hawaii faced torrential rains that led to flooding and road collapses.
In Washington, the House of Representatives was forced to postpone votes due to difficulties in travel caused by the inclement weather.
Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, commented on the seasonal weather pattern, saying, This is what happens in March and April. It’s a clash in the air masses...
Forecasters Warn About Polarizing Storms
The storm system forecasted to deliver snow in the Midwest is rapidly approaching the East Coast, where it is predicted to bring dangerously high winds and could potentially produce long-lasting tornadoes, according to weather experts.
The wind is the primary threat today, said meteorology professor Victor Gensini from Northern Illinois University, indicating that the areas from South Carolina to Maryland are most at risk.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has urged residents to activate emergency alerts on their devices in preparation for wind gusts exceeding 70 mph.
Continued Blizzard Warnings
Blizzard conditions are ongoing in parts of Wisconsin and Michigan, where accumulations have reportedly reached two feet of snow, with further snowfall expected. Schools closed in many communities across these states, such as Milwaukee and Marquette.
Residents in affected areas expressed concerns about the sustained weather, with many stocking up on essentials in case of extended isolation.
Meanwhile, flight disruptions continued to plague major airports, with more than 350 cancellations recorded at Chicago O’Hare alone.
Hawaii Struggles with Extreme Rainfall
In Hawaii, rainfall led to mudslides and significant flooding, particularly on Maui, where locals reported historic water levels that caused property damage and infrastructure issues.
Forecast Shifts Toward Cold Weather
As storms progress, forecasts predict a sharp dip in temperatures across the East Coast, with freezing wind chills expected to reach as far as the Gulf Coast. Rainfall is expected to turn into snow in several regions, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the current weather system.
