The US Treasury has officially implemented sanctions against Antal Rogan, a central figure in Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's administration and head of his cabinet office. Rogan's sanctioning is a notable event between NATO allies, reflecting the significant deterioration in US-Hungarian relations following Russia’s large-scale assault on Ukraine almost three years ago.
"Antal Rogan is a primary architect, implementer and beneficiary of this system of corruption," stated David Pressman, the outgoing US Ambassador to Hungary, who departs Budapest soon after two and a half years of active diplomacy and vocal criticism of the Orban regime.
His exit comes just before Donald Trump returns to the White House, someone who has expressed a more favorable view of Orbán, positioning him as a political ally. In remarks to the press, Ambassador Pressman pointedly asserted, "It is not the United States that threatens Hungary's sovereignty, but rather the kleptocratic ecosystem Minister Rogan has helped to build and direct, and that he has benefited from personally."
Reacting swiftly, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto described the sanctions as a personal vendetta of the ambassador, asserting that the departing diplomat leaves Hungary in disgrace. He expressed relief at the anticipation of a new US administration that would view Hungary as a friend rather than an adversary.
Former US ambassador to Hungary, David Cornstein, echoed this sentiment, criticizing the sanctions as an indication of the current administration's antagonistic approach towards Hungary.
As the Trump administration prepares to take over, questions arise regarding the future of Rogan's sanctions. Although there is speculation about a possible repeal, Hungary's ties with Russia have raised concerns among NATO countries. Paradoxically, while the public narrative emphasizes loyalty to conservative values, dissatisfaction exists within Fidesz about the perceived disconnect between Rogan's lifestyle and the party's proclaimed principles.
