A student was arrested after a principal and a teacher were shot at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, southern France, on Monday morning.
The 14‑year‑old pupil was detained immediately after the incident, according to Mayor Jean‑Pierre Squillari. No children were harmed and the teachers suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries.
According to BFMTV and Le Parisien, the shooting was not linked to ongoing protests over school conditions.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray posted that two staff members – a principal and a teacher – were the victims of gunshot wounds, and that a student was the alleged perpetrator.
The pupil reportedly entered the school with a gun, fired several shots, and was restrained by staff. The principal, aged 53, was shot in the leg, while the 37‑year‑old teacher was hit in the thigh.
All students were immediately confined and made safe within seconds, said Mayor Squillari. Minister Geffray and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez later visited the scene near Marseille.
