Burned ferry near Coron

The Philippine Coast Guard announced that the death toll from a ferry blaze near Coron has risen to 76.

Of the more than 130 passengers and 17 crew aboard the MV June Aster, 41 bodies have been recovered and 13 people remain missing, while 43 survivors are being treated for injuries.

Investigators say the fire started in a cargo hold and spread rapidly, preventing passengers from donning life‑jackets.

Officials are calling for a thorough probe into possible manifest discrepancies, cargo handling, and emergency response protocols as the wreck roars into the sea.

The operator, Atienza Interisland Ferries, has pledged full cooperation with the inquiry, while the Coast Guard continues combing the wreck for additional victims.
