In brief
The International Monetary Fund projects a slowdown in global economic growth and an increase in inflation for the United States, attributing these changes to President Trump's trade war and heightened tariffs on imports.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released projections indicating a significant slowdown in global economic growth this year, primarily influenced by President Trump's extensive trade policies. The repercussions of this trade war are expected to heavily burden the United States, the world’s largest economy. In a report issued on Tuesday, the IMF states that Trump's recent tariff hikes, the highest seen since the Great Depression, are set to undermine economic stability. The president imposed a sweeping 10 percent tariff on most imports, with particularly punitive duties on Chinese goods reaching as high as 145 percent. Furthermore, reciprocal tariffs on major trading partners like the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have been temporarily postponed to facilitate the negotiation of bilateral trade agreements.Such policies are creating significant uncertainty among U.S. businesses that export or depend on foreign inputs, dampening productivity just as global economies were beginning to stabilize after a prolonged period of inflation. Both China and Canada have retaliated against these tariffs, while the European Union has threatened to respond with increased tariffs if the U.S. enforces its planned sales tax on imports. In their World Economic Outlook report, the IMF anticipates a reduction in global output to 2.8 percent from 3.3 percent in the prior year. Earlier forecasts indicated a steady growth trajectory for 2025. The I.M.F. anticipates that the impact of tariffs will likely contribute to a slowdown in U.S. economic output, which is predicted to drop to 1.8 percent this year, down from 2.8 percent in 2024. This represents a noticeable decline from earlier predictions that estimated U.S. growth at 2.7 percent, reflecting a substantial shift in economic forecasts as the country navigates the complexities of this ongoing trade war.
