MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Morgan Geyser, the Wisconsin woman who was released from a mental institution after her conviction related to the near-fatal stabbing of a classmate in the name of the horror character Slender Man, has chosen not to contest her extradition from Illinois. This decision follows her recent escape from a group home.
During a court hearing on Tuesday, Geyser agreed to be transferred from a jail in Cook County, Illinois, to Wisconsin, where she may face repercussions from health officials concerning her conditional release. Wisconsin authorities have 30 days to retrieve her.
Escape to Illinois
Police reported that Geyser cut off her GPS tracking bracelet and fled her Madison home alongside a 43-year-old companion. The two were apprehended at a truck stop in Posen, Illinois, after spending the night outside.
Geyser's friend, who has not been named due to ongoing investigations, claimed they had formed a friendship through church and feared that their encounters would cease if Geyser's circumstances changed.
‘You’re not wanted for murder, right?’
Footage from the arrest shows Geyser in distress over the separation from her friend and indicates her realization of the gravity of her actions in the past.
Earlier in life, Geyser was committed to a mental institution for participating in a stabbing that aimed to please the fictional entity Slender Man. She and her accomplice lured their classmate, Payton Leutner, into the woods in 2014, stabbing her multiple times while claiming they felt compelled to act out of fear for their families' safety.
Geyser’s Path Forward
After gaining conditional release this past September, Geyser’s next steps remain uncertain as authorities evaluate the implications of her recent escape. Her past continues to haunt her, and she faces a challenging path as she tries to rebuild her life.
The Slender Man mythos, which originated online in 2009, has had lasting impacts, not only on the lives directly involved but also on broader cultural conversations surrounding mental health and the influence of internet folklore.
