First Lady Melania Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to her letter concerning child victims of the Russia-Ukraine war. She made the statement on Friday, highlighting her 'open channel of communication' with Putin, which led to the reunification of Ukrainian children who were displaced during the conflict.
The 'peace letter' was delivered during Putin's visit to Alaska in August, where Mrs. Trump urged him to protect the children, asserting that it would serve humanity. In the past 24 hours, she reported, eight children have been rejoined with their families, having endured significant turmoil due to the ongoing war.
Of the reunited children, three were separated after being displaced to Russia amid active fighting. Another girl was returned from Ukraine to Russia. The reunifications were coordinated by both Ukrainian and Russian representatives, and the First Lady received detailed reports, including photographs and the circumstances of each child involved.
Mrs. Trump mentioned that she learned significantly about this issue since she initially wrote to Putin, indicating he had responded in writing. In her letter, she emphasized the universal dreams of children for love and safety.
This development marks a positive step in her advocacy for children's rights, a focus she began during President Trump's term with the launch of the BE BEST initiative aimed at promoting children's well-being globally. Earlier this year, she also led efforts for Congress to pass the Take It Down Act, aimed at banning revenge porn to protect children.
