HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A significant winter storm battered Michigan on Monday, causing a massive pileup that involved over 100 vehicles on Interstate 196, just southwest of Grand Rapids. The Michigan State Police reported that both directions of the interstate were closed to allow for the removal of vehicles, which included more than 30 semitrailer trucks. While numerous injuries were recorded, thankfully, no fatalities have been reported.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the effects of the ongoing winter storm sweeping across the country. The National Weather Service has issued severe weather warnings for a range of states, including northern Minnesota through to Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Extremely low temperatures and winter storm alerts have been a concern as the cold front moves southward.

As the storm generated unusual weather patterns, snowfall extended as far south as Florida's Panhandle, impacting local playoff football games in Massachusetts and Chicago, where players struggled to maintain control of the ball during adverse weather conditions.

Officials from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s office reported numerous accidents and jack-knifed semitrailers, contributing to lane blockages along the interstate. Stranded motorists were provided transportation to Hudsonville High School, where they could seek assistance or arrange alternate rides. Cleanup operations will keep the roads closed for several hours, indicating the persistent challenges caused by this intense winter weather.
