U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that talks with Ukraine regarding a potential deal to conclude the Russia-Ukraine conflict were productive but emphasized that more work is needed.

The recent meetings held in Florida included a Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov, the new chief negotiator appointed after Andriy Yermak resigned following corruption allegations.

In attendance were pivotal figures such as Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as part of ongoing intense diplomatic efforts.

The meetings come after the leak of a controversial 28-point U.S. peace plan, which surprised Ukraine and its European allies, as it seemed to favor Russia.

Rubio highlighted that the focus should not just be on the immediate cessation of fighting but on establishing conditions that would promote Ukraine's long-term prosperity. He reiterated the objective of peace talks to leave Ukraine independent and prosperous.

Umerov echoed these sentiments, stating, 'We are discussing about the future of Ukraine, about the security of Ukraine, about no repetition of aggression of Ukraine.' He described the discussions as 'productive and successful.'

However, the fate of territories controlled or annexed by Russia remains a significant unresolved issue.

Despite the challenges, Umerov expressed optimism regarding U.S. support, saying, 'US is hearing us. US is supporting us. US is working beside us.'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is anticipated to engage in further discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron this week, underscoring Ukraine's efforts to secure alliances as the conflict continues.

Since the invasion on 24 February 2022, tens of thousands have been killed or injured, and millions have been displaced, highlighting the urgency of resolving this protracted conflict that began in 2014.
