In brief
Despite assurances of being safe in a video, Ryan Borgwardt, a Wisconsin man who faked his own death, remains uncommitted to returning to his family, according to local authorities.
In a shocking development, a Wisconsin man who orchestrated an elaborate ruse to fake his own death has resurfaced in a video claiming he is "safe." Ryan Borgwardt, who had been missing for three months after disappearing from his home in Watertown, Wis., communicated with the authorities via video stating he is secure in an apartment somewhere in Eastern Europe. The video, which was presented by Green Lake County Sheriff Mark A. Podoll during a news conference, features Borgwardt in what appears to be a minimalist living space. In the 24-second clip, he says softly, "Good evening, it’s Ryan Borgwardt. Today is Nov. 11. It’s approximately 10 a.m. by you guys. I’m in my apartment. I am safe, secure, no problem. I hope this works."Sheriff Podoll revealed that investigators have maintained near-daily discussions with Borgwardt, who reportedly established contact with a woman in Uzbekistan before fleeing. Authorities, although aware of Borgwardt's general location, have not pinpointed his exact whereabouts. They are pressing him to return to Wisconsin, emphasizing the emotional strain his actions have placed on his wife and three children."We keep pulling at his heartstrings," Sheriff Podoll stated, expressing hope that Borgwardt would eventually return to rectify the upheaval he has caused. However, as of now, there is no indication that he is willing to come home. "We're not going to give up. We’re going to continue because he needs to come home to his kids,” Podoll added. The case continues to evolve, drawing attention from both local community members and authorities.
