Indian judge’s compassionate letter gives hope to child rape survivor

In a court ruling, a judge’s deeply moving letter was addressed to a 10‑year‑old girl who faced sexual abuse at age seven. The judge praised her courage, called her the bravest little girl, and assured the victim that the offender would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The offender received a life sentence and will die inside the prison walls, while the survivor was awarded a compensation payment of 1.05 million rupees.

Unlike ordinary judgments, the letter was written directly to the child, urging her to keep living, to attend school, to laugh and dream, and promising that the court would always remember her bravery.

The letter first appeared in a Delhi high‑court order that rejected the convict’s bail appeal. The high‑court judges ordered a printed copy to be handed to the child along with the compensation.

Social media has flooded with praise for the judge’s empathy and called the letter a rare gesture of kindness in India’s justice system. Critics point out that this remains a warning, since more than 69,000 child‑abuse cases were documented in 2024, underscoring that many victims are not reported because abusers are often trusted caregivers.
