During the Golden Globes ceremony, several celebrities donned anti-ICE pins as a powerful statement against the violent actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), notably in tribute to Renee Good, who tragically lost her life when an ICE officer shot her in Minneapolis.
The pins, emblazoned with messages like 'BE GOOD' and 'ICE OUT', added a politically charged dimension to the prestigious event, reflecting a shift from the typically apolitical atmosphere of prior ceremonies. Among the attendees, actor Mark Ruffalo was prominently seen wearing one of the pins on the red carpet.
In the wake of Good's murder, protests erupted across various cities nationwide, demanding accountability from ICE for her death amid other recent shootings involving border patrol agents. The protests have seen escalating tensions with law enforcement, particularly in Minneapolis, where ICE's largest immigration operation is currently underway.
“We need every part of civil society to raise their voice,” stated Nelini Stamp of Working Families Power, one of the campaign's leaders. “Our artists, our entertainers—all of society should reflect these issues.”
The initiative to wear the 'ICE OUT' pins originated from a discussion between Stamp and Jess Morales Rocketto of Maremoto, emphasizing the potential of high-profile events to spotlight social issues. The movement aims to elevate the names of victims like Good and advocate for continued awareness of the violence related to immigration enforcement.
As they prepare for future events this awards season, the organizers are calling on the community to keep pushing for justice and accountability regarding the treatment of immigrants and to remember those lost in such tragedies.
