In brief
Authorities arrested five Guatemalans and one U.S. resident on charges related to human trafficking and a deadly 2021 traffic incident involving migrants.
In a coordinated crackdown that commemorated the third anniversary of a tragic truck accident that resulted in the deaths of over 50 migrants, authorities have arrested six individuals. These included five Guatemalans and one residing in Texas, all believed to be implicated in a human smuggling operation that led to the accident. The incident occurred on December 9, 2021, when a truck carrying approximately 160 migrants overturned around Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas state, Mexico. Initial reports indicated that the truck was speeding and lost control on a sharp curve, ultimately crashing into a pedestrian bridge and construction site, causing more than 50 fatalities and injuring over 100 others, most of whom were migrants from Guatemala. On December 9, 2024, in response to requests from the U.S. authorities, Guatemalan police detained four members of a suspected human trafficking organization. Those arrested included Tomas Quino Canil, Alberto Marcario Chitic, Oswaldo Manuel Zavala Quino, and Josefa Quino Canil De Zavala. Meanwhile, Jorge Agapito Ventura was apprehended in Cleveland, Texas.Alongside these arrests, a sixth suspect was also taken into custody, though their name was not disclosed in the case's unsealed indictment. All five named Guatemalan suspects face serious charges in the Southern District of Texas, including conspiracy to facilitate the illegal entry of migrants into the U.S. and endangering their lives, ultimately leading to extensive injuries and fatalities. As investigations continue, these arrests mark a significant move toward addressing the ongoing crisis of human trafficking and the perilous circumstances faced by migrants seeking refuge in the United States.
