In brief

A court in Finland handed down a life sentence to Voislav Torden, a commander of the Russian paramilitary group Rusich, for war crimes committed during the 2014 invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The Helsinki District Court found him guilty of orchestrating an ambush that resulted in the death and mutilation of Ukrainian soldiers. This conviction is notable as it represents the first such ruling in Finland concerning international war crimes linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Torden, also known as Yan Petrovskiy, faced multiple charges but was acquitted of one due to lack of evidence. The ruling aligns with findings from a United Nations commission that reported grave human rights violations perpetrated by Russian forces in Ukraine. The paramilitary group he led is connected with neo-Nazi ideology and has been active in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, further drawing international sanctions against its members.
