In brief

With implications for millions, the future of clean drinking water hangs in the balance as policy shifts loom.

In the wake of Donald Trump's expected presidency, public health advocates are raising alarms about potential setbacks in federal clean water initiatives, particularly concerning harmful “forever chemicals,” or PFAS. These compounds have been detected in tap water across the United States and are connected to serious health risks such as cancer.Donald Trump’s administration could fundamentally alter how these chemicals are treated, especially given the insights shared by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's health secretary pick. Kennedy's objections have centered on substances he deems excessive in public drinking water, but the more pressing issue revolves around PFAS.Earlier this year, former President Biden took a significant step aimed at addressing this issue by mandating utilities to eliminate six specific types of PFAS from drinking water. However, this order has faced backlash from chemical companies that have filed lawsuits challenging the directive. There is rising concern that these companies may push for a swift repeal of the Biden administration’s policies under Trump's potential governance."There is considerable fear that essential safeguards for our drinking water, such as the allowance of toxic substances, will be compromised," said Erik Olson from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Olson's remarks come amid a growing public awareness regarding the dangers associated with PFAS in drinking water—a concern likely to provoke widespread discontent among voters. With water safety becoming an increasingly urgent issue, the trajectory of environmental policy could see pivotal changes depending on the decisions made under Trump’s leadership. Public advocates call for vigilance as they anticipate the ripple effects of these incoming regulations, hopeful that constituents will demand accountability in safeguarding their water from harmful contaminants.
