Eighteen people are missing after a blast at a military explosives manufacturing facility in Tennessee on Friday.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis stated that one person initially thought to be at the site was later found at home, while four or five others were taken to a nearby hospital following the massive explosion that devastated the factory.
There's nothing to describe, it's gone, he remarked, describing the destruction of the facility in Bucksnort, located approximately 56 miles (90km) southwest of Nashville. The plant specializes in the development, manufacture, handling, and storage of explosives, and the cause of the blast is still unknown.
Aerial footage from the scene depicted charred debris, smoldering vehicles, and virtually no remaining structure from the Accurate Energetic Systems factory. Sheriff Davis, visibly emotional during a media briefing, hesitated to disclose the number of fatalities but emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that workers arriving for their shifts are now potentially unaccounted for.
A second briefing confirmed that 19 people remained unaccounted for, with details emerging that the explosion originated in a large building and dispersed debris across a half square mile. The impact was felt even in nearby towns, prompting a hazardous response from first responders.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee acknowledged the tragic incident in a social media post, confirming that state and local authorities are cooperating with federal agencies to address the situation.
Casey Stapp, a spokesperson for TriStar Health, reported that two individuals were treated for minor injuries and released, while a third is still receiving care. The facility, situated on about 1,300 acres, was engaged in the production of high-grade military and commercial explosives, such as C-4 and TNT. Accurate Energetic Systems has since halted operations, focusing on the well-being of affected employees and their families.
The explosion occurred at the border of Hickman and Humphreys Counties, leading local and federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, to secure the site for a thorough investigation. Sheriff Davis emphasized the deliberate and careful nature of the investigation process.
This incident follows a previous explosion at the same location in 2014, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries. Experts note that while the mixing and filling of munitions present inherent hazards, strict regulations are essential for safety in such operations.
