As climate change intensifies droughts, disrupts rainfall patterns, and fuels wildfires, many regions are increasingly looking to the ocean as a source of drinking water.
Desalination – the process of removing salt from seawater – is one such method that has gained traction, catering to hundreds of millions globally. Its application spans from the Middle East, where it is critical due to severe water shortages, to many coastal areas in the U.S., emphasizing its growing importance in the global water landscape.
How Desalination Works
Most contemporary desalination operations are based on a technique called reverse osmosis, in which seawater is subjected to high pressure that pushes it through a semi-permeable membrane. This allows pure water to pass while retaining salt and impurities on one side.
Before reaching this membrane, seawater undergoes filtering to eliminate debris and microorganisms that could obstruct the equipment. Following desalination, additional treatments ensure the water meets applicable drinking standards by often including the reintroduction of minerals.
While reverse osmosis is the dominant method today, thermal desalination, which involves heating seawater until it evaporates and then condensing the vapor, is still utilized in some areas.
Where It's Widely Used
Countries in the Middle East, like Kuwait and Oman, depend on desalination for more than 85% of their drinking water. Its relevance is also extending into Africa, Australia, and drought-prone areas of the U.S. Such regions are increasingly adopting desalination as a viable solution due to the diminishing availability of freshwater resources.
Trade-Offs of Desalination
Despite its advantages, desalination has significant downsides. The process is energy-intensive, leading to substantial carbon emissions—estimated to be between 500 and 850 million tons annually, which is comparable to the aviation industry's emissions. The brine produced during desalination, which is often returned to the ocean, can negatively affect marine habitats due to its high salt content.
Moreover, desalination plants' intake systems frequently capture and kill marine life such as fish larvae, potentially disrupting food chains. Experts advocate prioritizing water recycling and conservation methods that generally consume less energy, with wastewater purification already offering a lower-impact alternative to seawater desalination.
Looking Ahead
To mitigate the environmental effects of desalination, some organizations are exploring renewable energy sources to power these facilities, as well as innovations in efficient membrane technology. The ocean’s inherent pressure may also be harnessed at deeper levels to facilitate desalination with reduced energy needs.
As temperatures rise and waterways dwindle, the role of desalination in addressing global water scarcity will only grow, but the pursuit of balanced, sustainable solutions must remain at the forefront of discussions.
