ATLANTA (AP) — Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a former sailor in the U.S. Navy who immigrated from Britain, has been charged in a series of deadly shootings in Atlanta's suburbs that have drawn national attention, including condemnation from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
Adon Abel, 26, is accused of killing two women, including Lauren Bullis, an employee of the Department of Homeland Security, while also critically injuring a homeless man. Despite gaining U.S. citizenship in 2022, darkest aspects of his past are resurfacing with allegations of violent behavior.
The seemingly unprovoked attacks occurred early Monday across the suburbs of Decatur and Brookhaven, leaving community members in shock and law enforcement scrambling for answers.
Timeline of Attacks
The first victim was Prianna Weathers, 31, found shot near a restaurant in Decatur at 1 a.m. Shortly thereafter, a homeless man was shot at a grocery store in Brookhaven around 2 a.m. Lastly, Bullis was found at 7 a.m. in Panthersville, suffering from gunshot and stab wounds.
Police have described the attacks as linked, and at least one was deemed random, heightening fears within the community. Witnesses report hearing gunfire and screaming, amplifying the chaos of the early morning rampage.
A Community in Mourning
Lauren Bullis, cherished by her colleagues, is remembered for her kindness and commitment to the community. Her family has spoken out, emphasizing her love for travel, reading, and running, while her friends recall her as a vibrant force.
This tragic event has reignited discussions around the U.S. immigration process and the complexities surrounding the granting of citizenship, especially concerning individuals with violent histories.
Criminal History Under Scrutiny
Adon Abel's military records show a commendable service but suggest troubling behavior with prior violent incidents, including guilty pleas in California for assaulting police officers. His past criminal record and the circumstances surrounding his citizenship raise questions of policy and security in immigration.
As the community seeks justice for the victims, the investigation continues to unfold, leaving many to wonder about the broader implications of such heinous acts on societal safety and immigration policies.
