On Thursday night, an ICE agent in the Bronx fired multiple rounds into a vehicle that housed a 28‑year‑old man and his 5‑year‑old son, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The DHS confirmed that the officer "discharged his weapon while attempting to arrest a criminal illegal alien." The man, later identified as Oscar Belgal, was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be alive. Belgal, originally from the Dominican Republic, has a record that includes grand larceny, assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons charges.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting "unconscionable and incredibly serious," adding that the officer fired "multiple rounds" into a car with a child inside. Governor Kathy Hochul said she had spoken to the President to express outrage and to request that any body‑camera footage be released to the public to establish the facts.
"I also asked that any body camera footage of the shooting be released to the public so we can establish the facts and get to the truth," the Governor wrote on X.
A protest group gathered at the scene, chanting "we want justice" and "ICE off our streets now," as the case unfolded in a city that has historically barred local police from assisting federal immigration enforcement.
This incident follows other high‑profile ICE shootings, including the January death of Renee Good in Minneapolis. Each case has raised questions about the limits of force that ICE agents may use and the oversight of their actions.
