Bollywood Actress Challenges Motherhood Myths with Ground‑Truth Play

In a bold move, actress Kalki Koechlin, famed for her roles on screen, has turned her own experiences of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum depression into a stage play called Belly of the Beast.

The production, co‑directed by renowned theatre director Sheena Khalid, adapts Koechlin’s 2021 book The Elephant in the Womb and follows five women in different stages of motherhood, from the excitement of impending birth to sleepless nights and career pressure.

Beyond the usual celebration of baby‑birth, the play unflinchingly treats darker topics such as abortion, miscarriage and the emotional heaviness of post‑partum depression, forcing audiences to confront how society routinely neglects these hardships.

Critics praised the drama for combining sharp humour with intense real‑life moments, noting that the standing ovation at its Delhi premiere indicates that the message resonated with many parents and non‑parents alike.

Koechlin notes that motherhood is often shrouded in idealisation; once she herself felt isolated after giving birth, she used writing as a therapy. The play hopes to remove the silence around such problems and encourage women to share their struggles openly.

Still, a recent poll shows that 69 percent of women in Indian cities are kept out of the labour market by domestic responsibilities. The play stresses that this pressure should be shared and that fathers and other caretakers should step up.

Overall, Belly of the Beast serves as a cultural touchstone, inviting a broader discussion on motherhood that balances nature’s wonder with the managed chaos of living.
