In brief
In a significant development amid the ongoing conflict, Hamas has announced the names of three hostages, including American-Israeli citizen Keith Siegel, who will be freed this weekend as part of a cease-fire agreement with Israel.
In a statement released on Friday, Hamas spokesperson Abu Obeida confirmed that Yarden Bibas (35), Ofer Kalderon (54), and Keith Siegel (65) will be released in exchange for numerous Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The accord, which has maintained a fragile peace for nearly two weeks, aims to conclude the recent conflict advanced by Hamas’s surprise assault on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities in Israel and the abduction of around 250 individuals.Yarden Bibas’s case has particularly resonated with many Israelis; he, along with his wife and two young children, were captured during the attack. Hamas has claimed that Bibas's family members were later killed in an Israeli airstrike, an assertion Israeli officials have yet to confirm publicly. The crisis sparked a prolonged military response from Israel, resulting in devastating casualties in Gaza, with local health officials reporting over 45,000 deaths. This weekend's exchange entails Israel releasing an estimated 1,500 Palestinian prisoners, a substantial number of whom had been sentenced for violent attacks against Israelis. Thus far, in accordance with the cease-fire agreement, about 10 Israeli captives have been released alongside five Thai workers abducted during the same assault in October. After a grueling period of captivity, Keith Siegel’s wife, Aviva, was freed in late November as part of an earlier hostage deal, leaving behind a painful uncertainty for their family. The protracted nature of this conflict has continued to add layers of complexity and sorrow as families wait for the return of their loved ones.Aaron Boxerman is an established correspondent covering the unfolding situation in Israel and Gaza from Jerusalem.
