In brief

In the midst of uncertainty, the community's families cling to hope, waiting for news of their loved ones as the grim recovery operations continue.

Aubonrat Setnawet, an electrician's helper, was working with her husband on the 23rd floor of a 30-story building under construction in Bangkok when disaster struck. While she descended to retrieve some equipment, she experienced a sudden and jarring sway, accompanied by ominous cracking sounds as the building gave way. With her cellphone in hand, she managed to escape amidst the chaos of falling debris and thick clouds of dust. Struggling to reach her husband, Nuguy, whose fate remains unknown, she stands vigil at the construction site, yearning for news amidst the widespread devastation. As rescue efforts proceed, the situation appears increasingly bleak. On Friday, search teams recovered eight bodies, with only one additional body found on Saturday. With around 80 individuals still unaccounted for, the anxiety felt by family members waiting in the Chatuchak neighborhood permeates the air."I am still here waiting, waiting for a miracle," Aubonrat expressed, highlighting the emotional toll this tragedy is inflicting on so many. The collapse has raised alarm regarding the safety protocols and regulatory practices associated with high-rise construction, especially considering this project was one of the largest undertaken by a Chinese state-owned company. As efforts to find survivors continue, the community grapples with a tragic blend of grief and hope, uncertain about what the future holds for those missing.
