US President Donald Trump has said Kyiv can win all of Ukraine back in its original form, marking a major shift in his position on the war with Russia.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, he stated that Ukraine could get back the original borders from where this war started with the support of Europe and NATO, due to pressures on Russia's economy.
Trump's comments followed talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after he addressed the UN General Assembly. Although he had previously warned that resolving the conflict could require Ukraine to yield some territory—an outcome Zelensky has categorically rejected—Trump's latest remarks expressed optimism.
He suggested that Ukraine could maybe even go further than that, although he did not elaborate on his statement. Notably, no mention was made of Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, or the full-scale invasion launched in 2022.
The shift in Trump's tone prompted skepticism from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who suggested that Trump's outlook was influenced by Zelensky's perspective, which he deemed fantastical.
Trump subsequently insisted that Russia's economic troubles present a golden opportunity for Ukraine to act decisively in reclaiming its territory, asserting that Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act, labeling Russia as a paper tiger.
Following Trump's statements, Zelensky expressed hope for increased security guarantees from the US post-war, hinting at the potential for more military aid, including weapons and defense systems.
Trump's remarks signal a dramatic turnaround from his previous assessments of Ukraine's plight, underscoring the unpredictable nature of his foreign policy approach. As the conflict continues, the responses from both Ukraine and Russia highlight a complex battlefield both politically and militarily.
