In brief

At least 18 deaths reported as ancient landmarks and buildings succumb to raging flames across South Korea, forcing thousands to evacuate amidst dangerous conditions.

South Korea is grappling with some of the most severe wildfires in its history, resulting in the loss of at least 18 lives over six days of unrelenting flames powered by dry weather and strong winds. Firefighting efforts continue as authorities assess the significant destruction, including the burning of two ancient Buddhist temples that were over a millennium old.The fires broke out in Andong City on Friday and quickly escalated, damaging more than 200 structures and burning tens of thousands of acres in the southeast region of the country. The government's response to this environmental emergency has led to the evacuation of over 27,000 individuals, including around 500 prison inmates, as officials strive to contain the active fires.By Wednesday morning, eight fires were reported still ablaze, a troubling increase from just six on Monday. The Interior Ministry confirmed that at least 19 people were injured, with six in critical condition. Many victims of the fires were elderly, reflecting a concerning trend as communities rally to cope with the aftermath.Acting President Han Duck-soo, who recently returned to office following his impeachment, described the incidents as possibly the worst wildfires ever experienced in South Korea. He stated that the fires were spreading beyond expectations. The government has noted that 43,000 acres have been severely damaged.Among the affected areas is the historic Andong Hahoe folk village, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Residents there expressed horror at the speed of the approaching flames, likening it to “the devil” on social media as support and firefighting resources strained against the elements.Effective response efforts have been met with challenges, including wind gusts reaching up to 56 miles per hour that hampered the deployment of helicopters and drones. The largest blaze, located in Euiseong County, has seen approximately 70 percent containment as crews battle the escalating crisis. The fires reportedly began in Sancheong County due to a suspected incident involving a lawn mower. As the fires spread, additional outbreaks occurred in neighboring areas, exacerbating the situation. In a proactive measure, the Justice Ministry executed an overnight transfer of inmates to ensure their safety as the crisis unfolded.Local officials have issued road closures, suspended train services, and reported power outages as they work tirelessly to combat the catastrophic wildfires. As the situation continues, residents hope for relief and support while reflecting on the significant loss of life and heritage threatened by this natural disaster.
