In brief

In a Paris court, former headteacher Audrey F detailed the escalation of tensions surrounding a classroom discussion on freedom of expression that resulted in the tragic murder of Samuel Paty. The situation spiraled following a student's false claims to her parents, leading to violent protests and eventually Paty's decapitation.

The former headteacher of a French school has shared her heart-wrenching account of the sequence of events that culminated in the beheading of Samuel Paty, a popular history and geography teacher, by a Chechen refugee. Audrey F, testifying in a Paris court, spoke candidly about her unsuccessful attempts to mitigate a conflict that spiraled out of control, beginning with a 13-year-old student's deceitful story directed at her parents. The tragic sequence began in October 2020 when Paty conducted a lesson on freedom of expression. Following the class, the student's father, having received misleading information, confronted Audrey F in her office, accompanied by a local Islamist activist. "I couldn't protect him," lamented Audrey F, reflecting on the loss of her dedicated colleague, described fondly as a skilled educator in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. The dispute ultimately led to Paty’s brutal murder by 18-year-old Abdoullakh Anzorov, who was subsequently shot dead by police. The girl, referred to in court documents only as "Z," had recently been suspended from the school for attendance issues and disrespectful behavior but misrepresented the events to her parents. She falsely claimed to have confronted Paty in a class she did not attend, alleging he had ostracized Muslim students while showing "naked" images of the Prophet Muhammad. In reality, Paty had sensitively handled a discussion involving three satirical cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo and had given students the option to leave if they felt offended. While Audrey F had reassured another concerned parent during a phone call alongside Paty, she soon learned that Z's father, Brahim Chnina, was rallying outside the school with another man, Abdelhakim Sefrioui. They vocally condemned Paty as a "thug," demanding disciplinary actions against him, with Sefrioui dismissing claims of freedom of expression. In the wake of growing tensions, Audrey F sensed an urgent need for intervention.Paty approached law enforcement to file a complaint, while the headteacher alerted the local authorities, citing increasingly hostile incidents. Although a police presence was established at the school, Paty refused to stay home until the upcoming holiday, believing in his right to continue teaching. On October 16, 2020, just before the school's half-term break, Samuel Paty was brutally attacked and murdered outside the institution, shaking France to its core. Following the incident, Chnina's daughter was convicted for her false allegations, while five other adolescents faced charges related to inciting violence. Audrey F expressed to the court that the landscape could have been different had Sefrioui and Chnina not disseminated videos online that further inflamed the situation. Reflecting on her inability to safeguard her colleague, she articulated a lingering hope for justice, stating, "If justice prevails, maybe I can move forward." The trial involving eight individuals associated with the incident is ongoing, while the memory and legacy of Samuel Paty continue to resonate deeply within French society.
