In brief
On Friday, a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, resulting in the collapse of the Sky Villa Condominium in Mandalay, claiming over 2,700 lives and trapping many residents under the rubble.
Rescue teams continue to search for survivors among the debris of the Sky Villa Condominium, a 12-story building that was once a symbol of modernization in Mandalay. The complex, launched in 2017 with promises of an "earthquake-resistant foundation," became the epicenter of tragedy when the earthquake hit on Friday, resulting in the tragic loss of 2,719 lives across the region. The eastern part of the condominium complex, which housed individuals and families seeking a modern urban lifestyle, saw five of its floors collapse, burying many residents beneath the wreckage. The air around the site has turned unbearable, filled with the stench of decay and desperation as family members frantically search for their loved ones amid the debris.Sai Myo Tun, a relative of one trapped victim, pleaded with rescue teams for faster action in hopes of finding his three-month-pregnant sister and her husband alive beneath the ruins. The chaos and urgency on the ground were palpable, as rescue workers from China joined local volunteers, racing against time to unearth potential survivors from the mass of shattered concrete and twisted steel. As the days progress, communities across Myanmar and Thailand react to the enormity of the earthquake's impact, rendering the once-bustling Mandalay skyline into a scene of tragedy and somber recovery. The ongoing rescue efforts illustrate the deep resilience of the affected communities as they navigate this unprecedented disaster.
