Bayesian Superyacht Recovered from Sicilian Waters After Tragic Sinking

A superyacht, known as the Bayesian, has been successfully lifted from the seabed nearly one year after it sank near Sicily, leading to the fatalities of seven out of 22 onboard. Italian authorities revealed that the luxury vessel, previously owned by British tech mogul Mike Lynch, will undergo rigorous examinations mandated by the public prosecutor's office before being entirely removed from the aquatic depths. Tragically, Lynch, along with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and five additional individuals, perished in the disaster.

In a significant development last month, an investigation uncovered that neither Lynch nor the ship’s crew were informed about critical vulnerabilities of the yacht, including the dangers posed by wind speeds exceeding 73 mph. The salvage operation footage captures the 56-meter vessel being extracted from the sea, exhibiting considerable damage and silt. The ship, identifiable by its name on the stern, is anticipated to be transported to Termini Imerese port for further inquiry by Italian prosecutors.

Previous recovery attempts faced setbacks, including a diver's untimely death during the operation. Additionally, the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) published a report asserting that wind gusts surpassing 80 mph violently impacted the vessel during the incident, causing it to flood within moments. Investigators emphasize that retrieving the yacht is vital for grasping the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Bayesian sank while anchored near Porticello in the early hours of August 19, 2022. Witnesses described the horrifying sight of the yacht disappearing within minutes due to unexpected weather conditions. Among the deceased were several British nationals, including the Bloomer couple and prominent lawyer Chris Morvillo, while 15 individuals, including Lynch’s wife, were rescued.
