Russian Air Strike Targets Ukrainian Town, Resulting in Casualties
Attack on shopping centre in Dobropillia leaves two dead and over 27 injured, raising concerns over escalating violence amid stalled peace talks.
At least two individuals have lost their lives, and over 27 others have sustained injuries following a devastating air strike on a shopping centre and market in Dobropillia, located in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. The attack, which regional governor Vadym Filashkin described as a deliberate targeting of civilians, occurred on Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage to more than 50 stores, 300 residential units, and eight vehicles.
In his address, President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault as "simply horrific," questioning the military strategy behind such an attack. There has been no official reaction from the Russian side regarding the incident. This escalation comes at a time when the US special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, is in Kyiv to engage in discussions with Zelensky about bolstering US-Ukrainian cooperation.
Governor Filashkin indicated that the assault involved a 500-kg (1,100-pound) bomb, which was deployed at around 17:20 local time, coinciding with peak shopping hours. Dobropillia, situated approximately 20km (12 miles) from the frontline and northeast of Pokrovsk—a key area for the advancing Russian forces—has been subjected to prior attacks since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022. One notable incident in March resulted in the deaths of 11 people, including five children.
Amid these developments, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Russian defense forces successfully shot down three drones approaching the capital in the early hours of Thursday, but details regarding casualties have not been disclosed. The United Nations reported that more than 230 civilians lost their lives in June alone, marking the highest death toll in a month throughout the course of the ongoing war.
Additionally, US President Donald Trump criticized the lack of progress towards a ceasefire, expressing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite his previous attempts at diplomacy. Trump indicated he would impose severe sanctions on Russia if a peace agreement isn’t reached within 50 days and announced that the US would provide advanced weaponry to Ukraine through NATO allies to support its efforts.
