Tragic Maritime Accident Near Mumbai Claims Thirteen Lives

In a devastating maritime incident, at least 13 individuals have lost their lives after a naval speedboat collided with a passenger ferry near Mumbai, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Indian Navy.

The privately operated ferry was making its way to the Elephanta Caves when it was struck. Among the deceased, three are navy personnel, with over 100 others having been successfully rescued, according to Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Eyewitness footage shows the speedboat spiraling out of control before crashing into the ferry, which ultimately capsized. The Indian Navy cited an "engine malfunction" as the cause of the accident.

"A Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with a passenger ferry," the navy stated, expressing sorrow over the tragic loss of life. A survivor who spoke to ABP Majha recounted the harrowing experience: "The speedboat crashed into our boat and water started entering our boat and it overturned. The driver asked us to wear lifejackets. I swam for 15 minutes before I was rescued by another boat."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences on social media, stating, "The boat mishap in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon." The incident has raised concerns regarding maritime safety as investigations into the cause of the collision unfold.
