Britain and Iran are at an impasse as diplomatic envoys from both sides were summoned following the arrest and charging of three Iranian men accused of engaging in espionage activities within the UK. These individuals were detained on May 3, 2024, and have been implicated in espionage that allegedly included surveillance of journalists linked to Iran International, a media outlet critical of the Iranian regime.
According to reports from the IRNA news agency, the British chargé d’affaires was urgently called in to provide clarification regarding what Iran has termed "unjustified" and "politically motivated" arrests. In response, the UK’s Foreign Office has summoned the Iranian ambassador, emphasizing a firm stance on national security and accountability from Iran regarding its actions.
The three suspects—identified as Mostafa Sepahvand (39), Farhad Javadi Manesh (44), and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori (55)—had resided in the UK since their arrivals between 2016 and 2022 and were previously granted temporary asylum. Metropolitan Police indicated that their suspected espionage activities spanned from August 2023 to February 2024. A fourth individual was apprehended during the investigation on May 9, but later released without charges.
