Afghan Women Rescued from Iran Face Grim Reality of Life Under Taliban Rule
Recent deportations from Iran have sent Afghan women and girls back to the oppressive regime of the Taliban, where their freedoms are severely restricted.
In a stark reminder of Afghanistan's repressive environment, three Afghan sisters, recently deported from Iran, lament their loss of freedom and rights as they prepare to face life under the Taliban. Marwa, 18, and her sisters are acutely aware that the liberation they experienced while living abroad has been abruptly taken away. “Afghanistan is like a cage for women, and we’re coming back to that cage,” said Khurshid, 17, the most artistic of the trio, who paints to express her emotions.
With Iran deporting over 1.4 million Afghans this year alone, hopes for a better life have been dashed for many women and girls who had found work or were pursuing education in Iran. The return home signifies a return to draconian laws imposed by the Taliban after its resurgence in 2021. The new Taliban regime strictly prohibits girls from attending school beyond sixth grade and restricts women’s rights to work and access public spaces, significantly limiting their autonomy and social engagement.
Khurshid highlighted the immediate challenge they face, illustrating the emotional toll of the deportation. While she defied Taliban edicts by showing her hair at the border, her sisters recognized that their appearance must conform to the stringent dress code enforced in Afghanistan. The sisters are resigned to donning headscarves and traditional clothing, illustrating a painful transition from freedom back to personal oppression.
As neighboring Pakistan reinforces similar immigration policies, the outlook for Afghan expatriates continues to dim. Many are left with the harrowing choice of returning to their homeland or remaining in perilous conditions abroad. For these women, the road ahead looks barren, filled with lost dreams and the haunting echoes of a life they can no longer aspire to.
