The Magic Circle Seeks to Reconcile with its Long-Lost Member After a Deception from 1991
The elite society of magicians attempts to track down a woman who posed as a man to gain entry decades ago, now looking to invite her back.
The greatest trick that “Raymond Lloyd” may have ever performed was a complex illusion: convincing an elite, male-only society of magicians that he existed. This masterful deception granted Mr. Lloyd acceptance into The Magic Circle in 1991. However, her true identity was revealed just months later leading to her ousting from the club. Now, The Magic Circle is eager to track her down, longing to rectify the past and make amends.
“I would love to look her in the eyes and say, on behalf of the other magicians that we have, ‘You’re absolutely welcome,’” expressed Marvin Berglas, the society’s president. Founded in 1905 and based in London, The Magic Circle boasts notable illusionists like David Copperfield and Criss Angel among its honorary members. Historically, membership was restricted to men until two determined women challenged this norm.
“I always wanted to be the first lady in The Magic Circle,” stated one of those women, Jenny Winstanley, during a 1991 CBC interview. “I really wanted to prove that women are as good as men.” Now, The Magic Circle's quest aims not only to bring back a lost member but also to highlight the changing dynamics in a field once dominated by men, striving towards inclusivity and acceptance within the magical community.
