Thousands Rally in Bangkok Demanding Prime Minister's Resignation
Amidst political turmoil, protesters fill Bangkok streets, urging PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra to step down following a leaked phone conversation.
In a significant display of dissent, thousands of demonstrators have converged in Bangkok, urging Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resign. The unrest has been ignited by the leak of a phone conversation in which she referred to Hun Sen, Cambodia's former leader, as "uncle" while discussing a recent border incident. The comments made during the call have roused public ire, prompting Paetongtarn to issue an apology while maintaining that the conversation was merely a "negotiation technique."
Prior to a trip to flood-affected areas in northern Thailand, Paetongtarn acknowledged the public’s right to peaceful protest. Saturday's rally marked the most significant opposition demonstration since her administration assumed power in 2023. Defying the pouring rain, protesters blocked roads at Bangkok's Victory Monument, brandishing Thai flags and slogans such as "PM is enemy of state."
Protest leader Parnthep Pourpongpan expressed that the Prime Minister's resignation is imperative, claiming she has become a detrimental force in Thai politics. One demonstrator, 70-year-old Seri Sawangmue, traveled from northern Thailand, voicing concerns for the nation’s sovereignty and deeming Paetongtarn unfit for leadership amid the country’s ongoing political crises.
While Paetongtarn has committed to discontinuing her future communications with Hun Sen, critics like Parnthep argue that both she and her influential father are under undue influence from the Cambodian leader. Paetongtarn, 38, is the daughter of the controversial former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who returned to Thailand last year after years in self-imposed exile. Only months into her term, she is already facing demands for a new direction in leadership, particularly amidst the ongoing dissatisfaction with Shinawatra-led administrations.
The protest coincided with an impending decision from the Constitutional Court regarding a parliamentary petition that could result in Paetongtarn’s removal over the communications debacle. The backdrop of the dispute is an escalation of tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, which have surged due to incidents along the shared border, including a clash that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.
Amid the political fervor, protesters sheltered from the rain with umbrellas, and as the skies cleared, a rainbow appeared over the demonstrators at Victory Monument, a stark symbol of hope amidst the mounting pressure on the Shinawatra administration.
