Florida Man Swallows Stolen Tiffany Earrings Before Arresting Authorities Can Retrieve Them
A 32-year-old man attempted to evade arrest by swallowing stolen earrings worth nearly $770,000, leading to his capture by Orlando police.
In a bizarre turn of events, a 32-year-old man in Florida has found himself in a precarious situation after allegedly stealing earrings worth more than half a million dollars and then promptly swallowing them before police could arrest him. Identified as Jaythan Gilder, he is accused of deceiving employees at a Tiffany & Co. store, claiming to represent a professional athlete, which allowed him access to several high-value items.
According to Orlando police, Mr. Gilder made his escape with two pairs of earrings valued at an astonishing $769,500 (£597,000) and a diamond ring, which he reportedly dropped while fleeing. The authorities caught up with him later that day and witnessed him ingesting what they believed to be the stolen jewellery.
Law enforcement officials later shared an x-ray image that reportedly displayed a foreign object in an individual's abdomen, although they did not confirm if the jewellery was successfully recovered. What complicates Mr. Gilder's legal situation even further is his history; he has previously stolen from Tiffany & Co. in Texas, and reports indicate that there are 48 active warrants for his arrest in Colorado.
Charged with robbery while masked and first-degree grand theft involving goods exceeding $100,000, Mr. Gilder is currently presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This strange incident raises questions about his methods and the growing trend of high-stakes thefts targeting luxury retailers.
