British counterterrorism units have made significant arrests, detaining eight men, seven of whom are Iranian nationals, amid escalating investigations into potential terrorist activities, as announced by London’s Metropolitan Police on Sunday.
In a focused operation, four Iranians alongside one unidentified male were apprehended on Saturday, suspected of planning a terrorist act against a specific location, which remains undisclosed due to operational sensitivity. The police clarified that the ongoing investigation is dynamic and involved close collaboration with the targeted site to ensure continuous updates.
Dominic Murphy, leading the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, described the inquiry as “fast-moving,” emphasizing their commitment to exploring various avenues to determine the motivation behind this alleged plot and whether there are further risks posed to public safety.
Information released by law enforcement indicated that amongst the Iranian nationals detained, two were 29 years old, one was 46, and another was 40, with arrests taking place in London, Swindon, Stockport, and Rochdale. Concurrently, a fifth man was arrested in Manchester.
Separately, three other Iranians aged 39, 44, and 55 were taken into custody in London under the recently enacted National Security Act 2023, with police searches underway at multiple addresses linked to these arrests; however, these specific detentions are not thought to be connected to the main investigation.
Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, remarked on the seriousness of these arrests, highlighting their implication for national security and reaffirming the government’s proactive stance alongside law enforcement agencies to adapt to perceived threats.
While the specifics of the investigated plots remain closely guarded, concerns regarding Iran's activities on British soil have been escalating, with MI5's Director General, Ken McCallum, previously categorizing Iran as a major growing risk for counterterrorism operations in the country. Since January 2022, the UK has reportedly countered 20 separate Iranian-supported plots threatening its citizens.
In recent comments to the BBC, Health Secretary Wes Streeting indicated that although the government would maintain public communication, respect for the ongoing nature of investigations limits detailed discussions.
Investigations are ongoing as the public remains vigilant amidst unsettling developments.
