British Authorities Detain Iranian Nationals Amid Counterterrorism Operations
Eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, have been arrested by London's Metropolitan Police in connection with ongoing counterterrorism investigations, raising concerns about potential terrorist threats.
In a significant operation, British counterterrorism authorities apprehended eight individuals, including seven from Iran, as part of two concurrent investigations, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police on Sunday. Among the suspects, four Iranian nationals and one unidentified individual were arrested on Saturday, under suspicion of orchestrating a terrorist act targeting a specific site, which has not yet been publicly disclosed for “operational reasons.”
Dominic Murphy, leading the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, emphasized the rapid progression of the investigation, stating that law enforcement is in close collaboration with those potentially affected by the events. He mentioned that they are actively exploring various avenues to understand the possible motivations and assess any extended threats to public safety related to this case.
The detained Iranian nationals ranged in age from 29 to 55, with arrests made in various locations including London, Swindon, Stockport, and Rochdale. Additional arrests involved three more Iranian men aged 39, 44, and 55, taken into custody at different sites in London; their investigation is considered distinct from the prior plot.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper underscored the importance of adjusting national security responses to evolving threats, acknowledging the arrests as indicative of serious public safety concerns. The British government, she mentioned, remains committed to collaborating with police and intelligence services to ensure the safety of the nation.
No further details regarding the plots or investigations have been disclosed by the authorities. However, last year Ken McCallum, head of MI5, flagged Iran as an increasing concern, citing 20 Iranian-backed threats addressed by security services since early 2022, including the conviction of a man involved in reconnaissance for an Iranian opposition media entity operating in the UK.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting reassured the public that the government would provide updates on the ongoing investigations but refrained from elaborating on specifics due to the sensitive nature of the operations.
