In addition to her struggle with MS, Garr faced further health challenges, including surgery to mend an aneurysm in 2007. She began her extensive career as a background dancer in Elvis Presley films, spurred by her mother's influence and early dance classes starting at the age of six. Garr's initial foray into showbiz included performing with the national road company of West Side Story in Los Angeles, followed by roles in popular television series such as Batman and Dr. Kildare.

Her significant breakthrough came in 1974 with her performance in the acclaimed thriller The Conversation, but it was her role as Gene Wilder's lab assistant in the horror-comedy classic Young Frankenstein that truly set her on a path to stardom.
