In the latest seismic event, Istanbul experienced a 6.2-magnitude earthquake, marking one of the strongest shakes felt in years, as residents react nervously amidst recovery concerns.

Istanbul has been shaken by a significant 6.2-magnitude earthquake, prompting emergency responses and mass evacuations within Turkey's largest city. The tremor occurred at precisely 12:49 PM local time (09:49 GMT), originating from a depth of 6.92 km (4.3 miles) along the coast of the Sea of Marmara, specifically in the Silivri region, approximately 80 km (50 miles) to the west of Istanbul.

While there have been no immediate reports of casualties or severe structural damage, Istanbul officials are actively inspecting buildings and advising residents to steer clear of potentially compromised sites. Testimonies from locals suggest this earthquake is among the strongest perceived in recent years, with reports of objects falling and panic spreading through homes.

Economics professor Selva Demiralp, who experienced the quake with family in a high-rise, described the experience as "quite scary." Despite the fear, she found solace in the presence of her loved ones, expressing relief that no considerable damage appeared to have occurred. Nonetheless, the lingering anxiety remains, as residents are left uncertain about the possibility of further, more intense quakes following the tremor's aftermath.

This recent seismic activity is particularly poignant in light of the catastrophic earthquakes that devastated Southern Turkey earlier in 2023, claiming over 55,000 lives. With Istanbul being the nation's most populous city, home to around 16 million people, the vulnerability of its infrastructure to seismic events remains a concern.
